Plebs: The Orgy.

A friend of mine has just recommended this show to me as she was undecided on it. I had heard of it but it had completely slipped my mind, what with college and revision, so I'm very grateful I was reminded! As you probably already know, I love a good ol' comedy, so was hoping to be impressed by ITV's new offering despite them not being known for their comedy (that is definitely still Channel 4's stronghold).

The opening scene made me laugh simply because it was so strange having the whole nightclub/bouncer scenario set in Rome in 27 BC, especially the ridiculously long recounting of names to try weasle their way onto the guestlist! Nowadays, all you have to do is 'drop someone an inbox' if you want to be on the guestlist of a club night; it does actually seem forever ago that people actually had to sweet-talk bouncers (or flash some flesh) to get in on the cheap. The contrast between the modern day behaviour and speech - there's at least one mention of "the hood" - and the historic setting seems to exaggerate this, although maybe a tad too much, ITV!

The second thing that made me chuckle was the title reel - the three central characters doing a funny littlle dance. What is it they say about simple things?
Pretty impressive that I laughed twice in the space of 59 seconds precisely, considering some shows, ie. It's Kevin, failed to even curl the edges of my mouth a tiny bit once throughout the whole 30 minute broadcast.
If you've seen Plebs already, you'll totally agree with me when I say my favourite character is Grumio.
The Karl Pilkington of Rome.
I'm already looking forward to the awkward situations he will place himself, Marcus and Stylax in throughout the next episodes. His simpleness cannot be challenged.
Typical of many comedy shows nowadays, Plebs introduces us to a possible love interest pretty sharpish, and to increase comedic value the girl is obviously way out of his league. Yes, this girl is an obvious "Fit-on" (that's a hybrid of 'fit' and 'a Briton' to you and me).
A lot of the humour from this episode comes from Marcus's desperate attempts to win over this 'Fit-on' and invite her to an orgy, which he instead describes as an "awesome party". 'Cos they're the same, right?
Fair to say, the orgy provides humour and some cheeky shots of a naked man, so all in all, nothing to complain about!
I'm really glad I was recommended to watch this show, and will definitely be tuning in next week to see how the trio get on in the metropolis of Rome in 27 BC.
