First of all, apologies for the awful pun in my title, but I couldn't resist!
In The Flesh is a new three-part drama broadcast on BBC3. I first caught wind of it on social network sites last month, and so have been eagerly waiting for its premiere. And I have to admit, I wasn't disappointed!
I did have some worries that it would be cheesy-supernatural, a la Warm Bodies, but thankfully BBC3 avoided this more modern stereotype of the supernatural, whilst at the same time humanising it.
The BBC seem to know what they're doing, as the show perfectly coincides with the end of the Being Human series: they have a ready-made audience for In The Flesh ensuring its success. Thankfully, it has extended to the rest of us who don't follow Being Human, making our Sunday nights a little less tedious.
The show follows Keiren, a teenager who committed suicide and then was 'resurrected' as a zombie in a kind of apocalypse (coincidentally, it did initially remind me of the Derren Brown stunt of a few months back). A drug is produced and distributed, however, meaning that all the zombies can become un-dead and live amongst society safely again. As you can imagine, this doesn't go down well.
What is strange, but also common in the majority of supernatural shows and films nowadays, is that you actually find yourself feeling sympathy for the 'monster', in this case Keiren. This is because of the irony that as a dead person, he is very much alive and more human than the other characters in the show. His anguish at coming back home and feeling very much an outsider is tragic, and I found myself willing his family, most of all his younger sister, to accept him and make a 'happy ever after' show for me to watch.
Of course, there wasn't a happy ever after. It is only the first installment after all. Enough hints have been dropped, as it were, to ensure I am captivated by the show and already excited for the second episode. For example, the mysterious 'Undead Army' - a kind of rebellion of the undead who, from what I can gather, are trying to kill themselves for a second time.
There is another big twist at the very end of the episode, which promises an interesting conflict of emotions in the next episode. I won't ruin it for you though!
I strongly recommend you catch this on demand (which you can here).
