Game Of Thrones, Season 3.

The highly-anticipated third season of Game Of Thrones broadcast last Sunday (Monday for us Brits), and it didn't disappoint. The opening episode has already promised an action packed season to come, with various imminent conflicts, twists, and even a few possible romances.

Loveable outcast Jon Snow meets 'The King Beyond The Wall' and begins his journey as a 'spy', yet I'm still doubtful whether he will stay true to his duty to The Night's Watch because of his growing feelings for Ygritte . Another Loveable outcast, Tyrion Lannister, pays a visit to his father to (justifiably) ask for some kind of reward for his near-fatal services in protecting the kingdom against the rebellion in Season 2. How can Tywin refuse that cute little face?! But he does, and poor Tyrion is left broken-hearted at being blamed for his mother's death yet again. Also in King's Landing, Margaery is getting comfortable in Sansa's old position of future wife to the king, and Cersei is making it obvious that she hates anyone that isn't a Lannister. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up marrying Joffrey just to continue the line of 'true-bloods'. Across the narrow sea, Daenerys Targaryen is continuing her development from the meek girl we first met in Season 1 to the strong-minded woman of war. Although I'm not so sure the slave warriors will be much use in a real-life war, as they're pretty stupid to let their leader cut their nipple off for no reason!
I became a fan of the show quite late; Season 1 and 2 had already been broadcast in full before I even heard of the show. Yet I was hooked instantly and began watching at least two episodes a week.
Game Of Thrones isn't really my usual kind of show. It's obviously very 'blokey'; the sheer volume of swearing, bloodshed and sex makes that indisputable. But it's still highly entertaining and an enjoyable watch, and even emotional at times! Yes, I have shed a few tears over the past 2 seasons, particularly when Ned Stark was cruelly beheaded by the (to put it nicely) twat Joffrey.
It's unbelievable that after the popularity of the first 2 seasons, Game Of Thrones is still not getting the coverage it deserves. I am of course only speaking for Britain as I have no idea about the coverage/advertising campaigns going on in the US for the show. But it is strange that a show that is doing so well on both sides of the pond for ratings, and that has a pretty much all Brit cast and filmed primarily in Belfast, isn't being celebrated.
From my limited research, it is reported that the third season was given a budget of $50million (!) which indicates how brilliant the technology and production that goes into a show like this is. If HBO are willing to invest in the show, surely the British public should try a bit harder!
For all you bookworms out there, the third season is based on the first half of George R. R. Martin's A Storm Of Swords. Unfortunately I still haven't got round to finishing the first installment of A Song Of Ice And Fire so I can't tell you what happens in this series, but showrunner David Benioff has promised fans that Season 3 will contain a particularly memorable scene from the novel. Intriguing!
As I've already mentioned, I haven't read the novels so I am just as clueless as to what will happen this season as the majority of you probably are. But that doesn't mean I'm less interested in the series. In fact, I am counting down the minutes until I'm able to watch the second episode! (approx 2880 minutes, for the record, as I don't have Sky Atlantic and will have to wait til Tuesday to watch!).
If you've never seen an episode of Game Of Thrones, where have you been?! It really is the perfect show for anyone. How can you not like a bit of violence, love, sex, swearing and general conflict?
Even I, the crap TV enthusiast, was instantly drawn to the plot and characters. It's phenomenal how much you can hate a TV character so quickly!
I am of course talking about the Lannisters there. Except Tywin. You can never hate Charles Dance. Ever.

You can find out more about Game Of Thrones, as well as watch previous episodes, on the Sky website here.
There's even a fan show called Thronecast, which I have just discovered and so might check out!
